Since being forced into using Lotus Notes as an email client (in Blog-space no one can hear you scream)….I have re-acquainted myself with Windows Notepad as the ultimate killer application. I now regularly draft documents, to-do lists, appointments, store notes/memos etc etc in simple text files.
Indeed, my mate, DJB has always used an ASCII text file and ‘grep’ as his contact book, but then again he is a hard core techy. I haven’t quite gone that far (yet), but I am finding that what the plain old text file lacks in sophistication, it makes up for in simplicity, portability and ease of update. I can even write documents faster in notepad, as I can focus on content and then edit formatting/spelling etc when I cut/paste into MS-WORD.
With the surge of PIM type applications and now devices (PDAs, Smartphones) on the market…it is amazing how far you can actually extend the text file metaphor (+search) and replace most applications? Maybe the killer device is a simple text-file phone
